This week, we broke the story of a drag performer who had been taken by ICE at a scheduled immigration appointment, the morning after they competed in the Miss & Mr. Safe Latino Pageant, promoting health in the community. The story has now been picked up by major mainstream news outlets and city supervisors are looking into her case.
We were able to report on this sensitive story, with quotes from those involved, because of our intimate knowledge and ties to the community, one of dozens our years of reporting experience have allowed us to gain access and win trust: People know we are accurate, fair, and committed to telling the stories others won't or can't. We are all local, and all part of the rich San Francisco Bay Area tapestry of cultures.
