Get into it: 5 fun food recs for the weekend
King's Combo at King Katsu Land in Daly City (photos by Tamara Palmer)

I've got some restaurant and other food recommendations to consider for your weekend adventuring! This is something I'll do here regularly, with a mix of brand new, true, and OG spots.

King Katsu Land
2085 Gellert Boulevard, Suite 6, Daly City

I love eating in LA's Koreatown, and this new pork cutlet specialist in Daly City hits all the same notes, with giant, flavorful plates. Three of us couldn't take down one single King's Combo ($25.95) of pork katsu, fish katsu, hamburger steak with fried egg, rice, macaroni salad, and surprisingly amazing gravy; I had leftovers for at least one more meal. We went for a birthday, and I will be inventing more special occasions to justify going back often.

They've also got a crazy XL eating challenge that's limited to five orders per day. The prize is getting your meal for free and your photo on the hall of fame wall, which is presently empty. For more about that, check out the latest issue of my personal CALIFORNIA EATING newsletter, which covers the whole state.

Curry Dungeness crab at Le Soleil in San Francisco

Le Soleil
Stonestown Galleria, 3251 20th Avenue, Suite 221, San Francisco

I was recently invited to lunch at the new Stonestown location of Le Soleil, a classic Vietnamese restaurant on Clement Street that also has an outpost in Hong Kong. I forgot how good this family-owned empire is, because it has been years since I went to the Clement location. The curry Dungeness crab is living rent free in my head right now, and I highly recommend it. And do not skip the rum-flambéed quail starter — it's one of the top two quail dishes in the city. Chef Dennis and Annie Wong's daughters are in charge at the new spot, and they're super welcoming. I'll be writing more about this restaurant and the resurgence of Stonestown as a whole, on the site this week.

Tour of Tatarstan at AyDea in San Francisco

AyDea
5801 Geary Boulevard, San Francisco

This halal café serves tea and food from Tatarstan, a republic in Russia, and is magically delicious. I recently tried the Tour of Tatarstan (perfect for two, with two savory beef pastries and a potato flatbread) and a pot of sea buckthorn tea, and want to go back for breakfast/brunch or afternoon snacks and tea. Everything was really memorable. Note that the original location at 799 Bryant Street is temporarily closed.

Seoul Train by Disco Dogs

Disco Dogs at the Outer Sunset Farmers Market & Mercantile
Sundays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., 37th Avenue at Ortega to Quintara, San Francisco

The Outer Sunset Farmers Market has a lot of fun hot food vendors to try, like our friends at Gumbo Social and the quirky Disco Dogs, which you may not have heard about unless you've been. At the latter, I love the Seoul Train, a hot dog with Kewpie, kimchi, gochujang, and shrimp furikake. They told me that they cater, and I think that Disco Dogs would be a fun vendor to engage for a party.

Portrait of an Angela's Ice Cream sundae

Angela's Ice Cream
3751 24th Street, San Francisco

Noe Valley is the lucky recipient of the first SF location of Angela's Ice Cream, and I felt that it was my duty to investigate. They're really friendly there. I love that they encourage you to sample as many flavors as you like, and that there are a ton of vegan flavors, including a plant-based version of their popular caramel crack, which has inclusions of saltine cracker chocolate caramel toffee. I blissed out on a whole sundae of crack. Angela's also has locations in Mill Valley, Healdsburg, Forestville, and Petaluma.

I took a brief break from publishing the GOOD TASTE column this week, as the idea I was working on needs a little more time to develop, but it's about a Bay Area food hall that will soon have five new food tenants.

This coming week, I'll feature an interview with Adrian Garcia, the food and beverage director from Goldenvoice. You'll learn how to find some hidden secrets at their massive Portola festival on Sept. 20-21 in San Francisco.

See you next weekend!
