Fun places to eat in October (part 1)

Fun places to eat in October (part 1)
Doppio Zero's margherita pizza is $10 on Mondays in October

October promises to be a good eating month in the Bay Area! Today, I want to suggest a few places to go in the first half of the month. I'll do a second letter with ideas for the second half of the month (including Halloween) soon.

Mondays in October: $10 Margherita Mondays at Doppio Zero's Bay Area locations

Here's a Bay Area-wide deal that looks enticing: $10 Margherita pizzas on Mondays at Doppio Zero (395 Hayes Street, San Francisco; 617 Laurel Street, San Carlos; 160 Castro Street, Mountain View; 220 East Campbell Avenue, Campbell; and 2025 Diamond Blvd., Concord, CA).

Oct. 1-4 House of Nanking pizza at Tony's Pizza Napoletana (1570 Stockton Street)

Chef Kathy Fang and her father Peter Fang are publishing their House of Nanking cookbook on Sept. 30, and celebrating with all kinds of collaborations and events, including a House of Nanking-inspired Chinatown Meets North Beach pizza that will be available Oct. 1-4 at Tony's Pizza Napoletana, with a book signing at 6 p.m. on Oct. 1.

Check out my video interview with Kathy and her full Bay Area book tour itinerary, which includes more fun events through the end of the year.

Oct. 2 and 9: Celia Cruz and Bad Bunny-themed dinners at Parche (2295 Broadway, Oakland)

Chef Paul Iglesias is finishing up his National Hispanic Heritage Month dinner listening series with Celia Cruz’s La Negra Tiene Tumbao (Oct. 2), and Bad Bunny’s Debí Tirar Más Fotos (Oct. 9). The á la carte menu for each week includes an album-themed cocktail and new autumn specials

Oct. 5: Drag Bingo Brunch at Saluhall (945 Market Street, SF)

Host Elsa Touche and guests will perform at a Drag Bingo Brunch from noon to 1:30 p.m. at  Saluhall. Admission is free, and all of the hall’s dining partners will be open for optional purchasing of food and drinks (including cocktails). My suggestion: take down a Smish Smash smashburger.

Oct. 9: La Cocina Pop-Up Night Market at 101 Hyde Street, SF

SF food business incubator La Cocina is hosting a night market in its Tenderloin kitchen with some of the newest food makers on the roster:

  • Chiricana Cocina Panameña - Panamanian cuisine
  • Cool Rolls - Rolled ice cream
  • Fusion Rolls - Bold fusion egg rolls
  • Hippie Chai - Vegan chai
  • Lunar Bakery - French/Taiwanese pastries
  • Sabores Komali - Mexican cuisine
  • Savoree - Creole cuisine

Tickets are $52.22 and include two small plates from each of the seven vendors and non-alcoholic beverages. Beer, wine, and cocktails are available for purchase.
